LOUIS BOTHA: THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Photography in the Karoo! It’s not about the camera, it’s about the engagement! It’s a life enriching experience! Why go to Tuscany or Provence for photography opportunities and finding peace of mind if our own Karoo, which is on our doorstep, easily accessible, tourism friendly and affordable, offers the same or better opportunities? Louis sees himself as a light-capturer! ‘Painting with light, that is what photography is all about’, says Louis.

I treasure the simple things in life and my work is testimony to my belief that less is more. My preference is to capture the beauty within remote landscapes, ordinary people and things. I am intensely aware of the value of Light and Time each time I press the shutter. I came to realise that Life is short, Art is long! I therefore rearranged my lifestyle completely in order to make more time to express my vision and feelings through using Light reflecting off still and/or moving subjects.

My preferred end product is an image that is printed on high quality fine art paper or canvas and that is displayed on a very special wall. Some of Louis’ work can be seen in Rookls (Waterkloof shopping centre, Pretoria) and in the Prince Albert Gallery (Seven Arches, Church street, Prince Albert).

Louis shares his experiences and the learning of his own journey through life and photography with others and developed a four day photography course which is hosted in the beautiful and tourism friendly Prince Albert. The course includes a landscape and a portrait practical workshop and it addresses both the visual and technical skills required to capture images with greater impact. See below for more details on upcoming course.
