Geography and History

Richmond is situated next to the N1 approximately halfway between Cape Town and Johannesburg in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. There are some 60 towns and cities worldwide named Richmond. Richmond is a lovely Karoo town surrounded by miles and miles of beautiful mountains and vast plains, which were once filled with herds of springbok. The grazing has now been taken over by large flocks of sheep, which give rise to the world famous Karoo Lamb.

During the unconventional, or guerrilla phase, of the Anglo-Boer War (1900-1902) the Richmond area saw many skirmishes between Boer and Brit.

Activities

Recently proclaimed South Africa's first Book Town, Richmond is the ideal destination for booklovers. Richmond is Africa's only Booktown. More than a dozen shops will keep you busy for hours on end, if not days. Our restaurant menus cater for all tastes and there are many accommodation establishments to choose from. As a Book Town, Richmond promises a variety of interesting secondhand bookstores and antiquated book dealers to attract bibliophile tourists.

In addition to offering culture, coffee and collectables, the town also hosts literary events and the annual "Boekbedonnerd" Festival which will have something for the whole family to enjoy.

Those who travel to Richmond might also stop at the Horse Museum, which is one of only two in the world. Here you will not only find equine-related displays, but also various other exhibits on the fascinating things from days gone by!
