Geography and History

Bedford is a vibrant country town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Bedford is famous for its annual garden festival in October, fun-loving farmers and fabulous hospitality. The many and varied gardens of the district run from the formal to the park-like to the specialist gardens of cacti and succulents.

The historic village of Bedford is tucked up against the Kaggaberg mountain (part of the Winterberg range) and the farms stretch across extensive grasslands and up into the dramatic Mankazana, Cowie and Baviaans River valleys. Angoras, merinos, beef cattle, goats and game are to be seen all over. Towns close to Bedford include Adelaide and Somerset East.

Activities

Activities include: Bird watching, hiking, cycling, fishing, golf, tennis, bowls and bridge. Anglers can fish for bass and sunfish. A variety of 4x4 trails caters for everyone from beginners to the experienced. An extraordinary variety of birds can be found in the district.

Bedford is claimed to be the only place in the south of South Africa where the tiny Scops Owl nests. There are opportunities for both rock climbing and abseiling, both for beginners and the more experienced. There are numerous places to walk or hike including two day hikes.

The Bedford area is a treasure trove if your passion is history, botany or geology. Bedford has a rich history of the 1820 Settlers and Afrikaans trekboers. Many farms and buildings are of historic interest, such as Glen Lyden church built in 1828, and "Bezuidenhout's Cave", of Slagtersnek fame, both of which lie in the Baviaans River valley.
