The Interpretive Centre at the Karoo National Park

The Old Schuur Interpretive Centre at the Karoo National Park is set in an old farm building, which has been renovated to reflect its original form dating back to the 1800’s.  Positioned just outside the rest camp near the camping site, the centre is accessible via a beautiful wooden boardwalk over marshy lands.

The centre offers historical displays and information on the flora and fauna of the Karoo, as well as the ecological and cultural history of the Park.  The items on display bring the early habitation of the area to life, while the bits and pieces of old agricultural equipment show what farming was like many years ago.

The Interpretive Centre is an excellent source of information for teachers, learners and visitors to the park, wanting to learn more about the magnificent fossil and geological heritage of the Great Karoo.  The grounds of the centre are well maintained and provide a serene relaxing atmosphere.

Bread in the Outdoors

As part of the historical displays there are two outdoor baking ovens (Afrikaans : bakoonde) situated on the lawns of the Interpretive Centre.  Early South African farming households used this type of oven for baking bread.

A wood fire was laid inside the oven and lit early enough for it to heat the whole brick structure.  When the bread was ready, and the oven was hot enough, the coals were then raked out, the bread tins put inside and the oven sealed for the time it took to bake the bread.
