Unique stops on a Northern Cape road trip

The Northern Cape is often considered to be a dry and arid destination, but what it lacks in rain it more than makes up for in gorgeous scenery and unique attractions. One of the many things to do in Springbok is a visit to the Namaqua National Park or Goegap Nature Reserve to  gaze at the breathtaking wild flower display. In Clanwilliam you can spend time at local tea houses learning everything there is to know about rooibos tea. Many of these typical Namaqualand towns are conveniently situated from one another, so you can plan a trip to explore the entire stunning province.

Book a room at one of the Springbok accommodation options for the duration of your stay. Springbok is the ideal stopover on your road trip, as it is located in the heart of the Namaqualand desert. So, if you are interested in exploring this special province, keep reading for some unique stops for your Northern Cape road trip.

See the daisies at Goegap Nature Reserve

One of the very first stops on your road trip into the Northern Cape should be in Springbok, specifically at the Goegap Nature Reserve. The flowers are in bloom from July to August, but it is truly a sight to behold at any time of the year.

There are gorgeous succulent fields as well as quiver tree forests to please any nature lover as well as unique animals which have adapted to living in the dry conditions. You can spend hours hiking in this reserve, but be sure to bring along a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water. This nature reserve is ideal for those who want to see something a little different to the usual road trip scenery.

Pick up some succulents in Nieuwoudtville

Nieuwoudtville is a town that is wildly popular during the flower season, but also has a lot to offer when the flowers are not in bloom. Here you will find a diverse array of unique succulents which are perfect for those who are looking to add to their collection of desert plants.

From this quaint town, you can make your way to Loeriesfontein where you will find a diverse display of windpumps at the Fred Turner Windpump Museum. It is ideally located close to Nieuwoudtsville, meaning that you can drive between the two for a full-day adventure. If you are staying in Springbok, you can spend the day in Nieuwoudtville and drive back to a comfortable and luxurious hotel for a restful sleep.

Enjoy the scenery on the Quiver Tree Route

If you enjoy seeing new sights and discovering new things, then the perfect place to drive through for you is the Quiver Tree Route, which runs through Upington, Kakamas, Keimoes, Augrabies, and other small towns.

The contrast of seeing verdant, green countrysides paired with dry, arid desert flora is breathtaking and will show you a new side to the Northern Cape. The quiver tree could be seen as the symbol of the Northern Cape, as they are as ubiquitous as the sand in the desert, and on this route, you will see at least 600 different species of trees, including unique succulents and other shrubberies. There are plenty of picnic spots to stop off at and stretch your legs on the way.

See a giant post box in Calvinia

When we think of traditional post boxes, it is not often that we think of the word “giant” in the same sentence. But in Calvinia, you will find a giant red post box that is still operational. It was originally a disused water tower, but then a local resident commented on how it looked like a post box and the rest, as they say, is history.

You can send a letter or a postcard from the post box and it will be stamped with a flower stamp, as Calvinia is also home to stunning wildflowers in July and August. You can also spend time trying out the different cafes and coffee shops in the area, which are as quirky and eccentric as the people. Be sure to bring along a charged camera as you will want to capture every moment in this creative and unique town.

Try something new in the Northern Cape

Many of the Northern Cape towns, such as Springbok, have stunning scenery to enjoy as well as fun and exciting activities to take part in. You can spend time in the Goegap Nature Reserve or relax in a luxury hotel and take in the breathtaking sunsets.

Or you could purchase some succulents in Nieuwoudtville and make your way down the Quiver Tree route. Don’t forget to send a postcard from Calvinia’s giant post box. This desert-like province has so much to offer for adventurers and nature lovers alike.
