General Information on Matjiesfontein

Matjiesfontein is a quaint little Victorian town in the in the Western Cape province of South Africa.  Situated in the Central Karoo region, Matjiesfontein was originally an outpost of the British Empire, a shelter for travellers on the Cape-to-Cairo route.   Here the air is crisp and clean, the skies bright and clear.  For a real adventure, take the train to Matjiesfontein!

Sleep in the magnificently restored Lord Milner Victorian Hotel.  Go for long walks, hikes and bicycle rides on the farm belonging to Matjiesfontein.  The Coffee House and the Laird’s Arms Pub offer mouth-watering breakfasts, coffees, teas, drinks and lunches.  The Lord Milner Hotel makes a delicious dinner!

There are two museums, the Marie Rawdon Museum and the Transport Museum with the London Bus, vintage trains, and cars.  Take a tour in the London Double Decker Bus, where entertainer Jon Theunissen tells you history and tales about Matjiesfontein. Enjoy chatting to the locals and hearing the tales and the legends of Matjiesfontein.

Karoo Images photo Library is owner run by Steve Moseley and Brent Naude-Moseley, and is based in Loxton, a tiny village in the heart of the Great Karoo. Steve and Brent have been exploring and photographing the arid regions of South Africa for the past twelve years.  Their library specialises in images of the Great Karoo, Little Karoo, Kalahari, Namaqualand, and Richtersveld, and also covers the Overberg and Garden Route regions.
