Tankwa Karoo
General Information
The Tankwa Karoo National Park is about a four hour drive from Cape Town. It is one of the most arid regions in South Africa, with summer temperatures regularly soaring into the 40's. The Word “Tankwa” is Khoisan for “land of thirst”. The desert-like nature of the park allows for some spectacular succulent plant growth along with some unusual animal encounters, like the bat-eared fox, and a leopard or two! With this in mind, during the winter months do not let the mild warm days fool you, the nights can get bitterly cold.
If anything, a visit here will inspire a quietness by the sheer vastness of the park. This, combined with the fact that there is no cellphone reception, makes for a great breakaway from city / town life.
Activities at Tankwa Karoo National Park
Although game viewing is not the main reason to visit, a game drive is worthwhile. Bird watchers will delight in seeing the Verreaux's eagles known to be in this area, along with plenty of other species. Gannaga Pass winds its way through the beautiful and serene Roggeveld Mountains – a lovely drive. There are some excellent hiking / walking trails as well. View the activities directory for advertisers in the area.
Accommodation
Tankwa Karoo National Park is run by SANParks and therefore has plenty of accommodation options to suit all needs and budgets. There are a few other accommodation options in and around the park as well – view the accommodation directory for more information.
