General Information

Ceres is situated 150km or 90 minutes drive from Cape Town, in the heart of the Cape Winelands.  It is the gateway to the Cederberg area (to the north) and Route 62 (to the south). The Ceres valley can be reached through Michell’s Pass (from Cape Town, via N1, R43, R46), Theronsberg Pass (from Touws River, R46) and Gydo Pass (from Citrusdal, R303).

Ceres is blessed with abundant sunshine and fertile soil making it home to some of the world’s most succulent fruit!   Sun-ripened to perfection, the fruit from this valley is full of essential nutrients, vitamins and minerals.  Ceres was named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres, a name which is fitting as the valley in which the town is situated is extremely fertile and is a major producer of South Africa's deciduous fruit.

Activities and Businesses

There are plenty of hiking trails in the Ceres area to keep you going all day - some hiking trails to try are:  The Christie Prins Trail and The Matroosberg Trail.  Most of the other trails can only be done if you use their accommodation. The district of Ceres also extends into the Karoo, where game farms and bird watching are popular amongst visitors.

During the winter months, the mountains are often covered in snow and the area has been referred to as Little Switzerland. There are plenty of snow activities such as skiing and snow boarding to keep the whole family busy.

Accommodation in the area include bed and breakfasts,  self-catering, lodges, farm stays and budget travel.  See the accommodation directory for select advertisers.
