Geography and History

Situated some 185 kms East of Cape Town, Touws River is the doorway to the Karoo, South Africa. When driving along the N1 from Cape Town you will see an abrupt transition between the green valleys of the Southern Cape and the arid plains of the Karoo. Merino sheep farming is the main source of income in the area.

Accommodation

Accommodation in Touws River consists of a hotel and a couple of Bed & Breakfast's. There is also camping at "Die Bokkamp".

Activities

Besides sheep farming, the town offers other interesting attractions such as a steam engine graveyard and the Loganda pillars, used for astronomical calculations in the late 1880’s.

To the north is the popular Kaggakamma reserve with ancient bushman painting sites which are 6000 years old. The nature reserve is also home to a variety of wildlife and bird species.

The Touws River area provides a very useful introduction to karoo endemics and does complement the better known Karoopoort area some 40km to the North. Birding is a popular activity here and you could target 80 birds on a summers’ day including 15 not found significantly closer to Cape Town!

Touws River which is situated on the national flower route, bursts into a kaleidescope of vivid Karoo flowers in the spring. Touws River is also home to the Cape’s famous Fynbos, succulent Karoo and rare renosterveld vegetation.

This area has a diverse range of activities.

Although a small town, there are a few restaurants on offer to suit every visitors budget.
